Many people believe that the Tarot originated in Ancient Egypt.

The two main sources of European culture, the Ancient Greeks and the Hebrews, both looked on Egypt as a place of great knowledge, mystery, and magic. As a very old culture, Egypt appeared to be filled with ancient secrets and power. Before the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in the early 19th century, which allowed scholars to decipher [some of] the hieroglyphs, that colorful form of picture writing seemed to embody such power. And since the Tarot also worked in pictures, it was only natural to assume some connection between the two.
